The Philippine Islands consist of 7,107 islands stretching from north to south in a fan-like shape in the tropical waters of the southwest Pacific Ocean. The total land area of the Philippines is roughly 300,000 square kilometers. The Philippine Island chains run from Luzon (the largest island) in the north down to the southernmost island of Mindanao, essentially ‘sandwiching’ the remaining islands. Approximately 90% of the nation’s population of roughly 90 million resides on 11 islands (Luzon, Mindano, Palawan, Mindoro, Panay, Masbate, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, and Samar). With its tropical monsoon climate, the average temperature throughout the year in the Philippines is balmy 26-27 degrees. Although the western coasts of Luzon and the Visaya Islands have pronounced wet seasons (June – November) and dry seasons (December – May), climate conditions vary depending on the location and topography of each individual island. Travelers visiting the Philippines must exercise caution during typhoon season (July - September) and must remain vigilant about earthquake activity due to the presence of numerous active volcanoes. Since the Portuguese explorer Magellan reached the shores of Samar in 1521, the Philippines have been subjected to foreign rule by Spain, the United States, Great Britain and Japan. The nation achieved its independence on July 4, 1946. As a result of prolonged Spanish colonial rule, roughly 93% of Filipinos are Christian. However, the nation is also home to unique Filipino religious traditions heavily influenced by indigenous animistic beliefs.
